What Does a Church Organist Do?

You will be responsible for providing music and accompaniment for church services and events. You will play the organ or other musical instruments as needed, and work closely with the church choir and other musicians to create a cohesive and inspiring musical experience for worshippers. Your knowledge of church music and hymns, as well as your ability to play and interpret music, will be key to success in this role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide music and accompaniment for church services and events, playing the organ or other musical instruments as needed.
  • Collaborate with church choir and other musicians to create a harmonious musical experience for worshippers.
  • Select and perform hymns and other music appropriate for the church calendar and liturgy.
  • Maintain the church’s musical instruments, ensuring that they are in good working order at all times.
  • Create and rehearse music for special events and performances, such as weddings and Christmas celebrations.

Qualifications

  • Prior experience playing the organ or other musical instruments in a church or similar setting preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of church music and hymns, with an ability to interpret and perform them in a meaningful and inspiring way.
  • Solid interpersonal and communication skills, with an ability to collaborate effectively with other musicians and church leaders.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays, as needed.
  • Familiarity with church systems and liturgy preferred.
